High Wycombe Grandeur

The woods of the Chilterns helped make the area famous for furniture construction. The town centre was redeveloped in the 1960s, but still retains some 16-18th century cottages.

Several notable National Trust properties are close by:

West Wycombe Park is an 18th century Palladian villa with a mahogany staircase in its Great Hall.

Hughenden Manor – a three storey redbrick Georgian villa – was Disraeli’s home from 1848-81.

Cliveden became famous – and notorious – for its society parties. This Italianate villa was designed by the Houses of Parliament architect, Charles Barry in 1851. The great hall has wall and ceiling panelling in oak, while the library, nicknamed the ‘cigar box’ by the Astor family, is panelled with cedar.

Restoring Wood Floors in a Period Home

Many homeowners around the area are drawn to older homes for their unique character, period features and unique design. But, with a period property comes the responsibility of maintaining a variety of original features and carrying out repairs where necessary. Many period homes are fitted with beautiful wooden floors, which are waiting to be restored to their former glory. A carefully restored floor will become the centrepiece of your home and improve the overall value of the property.

Types of period flooring

Between the 15th and 17th century most floorboards were built from solid oak with wide boards, however, during the Georgian and Victorian era pine softwood boards were used. At the time these were seen as inferior to oak, so were hidden under large carpets or painted. Parquet style flooring was popular up until the 1930s and was considered an expensive quality flooring, as it still is today.

Restoration of the flooring

The first step to restoring wooden flooring is to evaluate the various rooms. An older property may need just a simple sand and stain, or it could need a complete replacement. Flooring experts will be able to examine the flooring, determine what the flooring type is and evaluate its condition. They will then decide what the best course of action will be. Once they know what is required to repair your flooring they will meet with you to discuss the various options from parquet floor sanding and hardwood floor sanding to wood floor scratch repair and parquet floor repair. Planning the process with you, they will make you aware of exactly what is required and the associated costs and timings.

Types of finishes

Wood flooring professionals will be able to advise you on what type of finish is best for your home and its different areas. For example, one sanded in an oil treatment will provide a hard-wearing finish which is suitable for kitchens and bathrooms. A wax treatment is another option but is not durable enough for areas with water. Careful sanding will ensure the grain of the wood is shown beautifully once treated.
